The health of coral reefs can be predicted by a leading indicator which is the amount of chlorophyll in the water. It is often not possible to get timely water samples from areas of interest so an excellent alternative is to use satellite imagery.

This report shows how there is a strong correlation between actual in situ measurements of chlorophyll and an algorithm applied to imagery for the island of Diego Garcia.
